Spencer comes to directing with an eclectic background in acting, writing and film.
He has studied improvisation with comedy legend Del Close (Second City), appeared as an actor on Law & Order (charged with murder one), written for the animated series Behind The Music That Sucks, and spent his formative years as a clerk at Kim’s Video — the now-shuttered NYC institution devoted to rare and experimental film. Other positions in the underbelly of the industry include stints as a production assistant for Ed Harris, a gopher for Don Johnson, a driver for Pauly Shore, an usher at the Film Forum and a janitor at the Actor’s Studio.
In 2014, Spencer vaulted into the commercial directing world with his spot for DailyMVP starring Tom Brady, which got over two million views in one day and was praised by USA Today, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and ABC World News Tonight. In 2019, he won the Super Clio for co-directing JOUST, a collaboration between HBO and Bud Light promoting the final season of Game of Thrones in Super Bowl LII. He has continued to helm an array of high-profile work for clients such as Chevy, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Mountain Dew, Google, Intel, Xfinity and many more.
Spencer grew up in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from New York University. He is a member of the Director’s Guild of America, the Screen Actors Guild and Costco.
